Democrat Adam Hamawy has made history by becoming New Jersey’s first Muslim member of the United States Congress after winning the state’s 12th Congressional District election.
Hamawy defeated Republican candidate Gregg Mele, securing the seat previously held by Democratic Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman, who is retiring after serving for a decade.
The 56-year-old plastic surgeon, former US Army combat doctor and humanitarian medical worker gained national recognition for his medical services in conflict zones, including Bosnia, Sudan, Lebanon and Syria.
In 2024, Hamawy travelled to southern Gaza on a humanitarian medical mission during Israel’s military offensive. He later became one of several doctors trapped in the territory after Israeli authorities closed the Rafah border crossing.
US Senator Tammy Duckworth intervened to help secure his departure. Hamawy had previously saved her life when her helicopter was shot down during the Iraq War in 2004.
A first-time political candidate, Hamawy built his campaign around expanding universal Medicare, ending US military assistance to Israel, cancelling medical and student loan debts, and abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
His victory marks a historic milestone for Muslim representation in American politics and brings his experience in military medicine and humanitarian work to the US House of Representatives.
