ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s seafood sector has recorded strong growth during the first quarter of fiscal year 2026-27, with exports rising by 74 percent. The latest performance highlights the growing potential of the country’s fisheries industry and its expanding presence in international markets.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said the government plans to take further steps to expand Pakistan’s seafood exports. He stressed the need for modern practices to help local fishermen compete more effectively in global markets.
Focus on European Markets
The government also plans to increase access to European Union markets. Officials believe stronger standards and improved production methods can help Pakistani seafood products gain wider acceptance abroad.
Chaudhry urged fishermen and other stakeholders to adopt modern techniques. He said the industry needs better practices to strengthen its position in the international market.
Pakistan has already increased its presence in several overseas markets. The seafood industry has attracted growing interest from international buyers, including those in Russia.
Growing Interest From Russia
Pakistani seafood products are gaining recognition among Russian buyers. Pakistan recently participated in a seafood exhibition in St. Petersburg to explore new business opportunities.
The response from Russian buyers and visitors remained encouraging. Industry representatives said the interest shows the potential for Pakistan to increase seafood exports to Russia.
The Pakistan Trade Mission in Russia, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and the Marine Fisheries Department have supported efforts to improve market access.
Expanding Seafood Export Potential
Pakistan’s fisheries sector has shown strong export momentum in recent years. The government has also focused on improving quality standards and opening new international markets.
Earlier, the maritime minister said seafood exports reached a record $568 million during fiscal year 2025-26. Frozen fish remained the leading export category, followed by frozen squid and cuttlefish, fish meal and shrimp products.
The latest growth provides another opportunity for Pakistan to strengthen its blue economy. With better standards, modern fishing methods and wider market access, the seafood industry can contribute more to export earnings and create opportunities for coastal communities.
