Pakistan has launched a new sub-national polio vaccination campaign across 115 districts, aiming to protect around 31 million children from the crippling disease.
The campaign will continue from September 21 to September 27, with more than 273,000 polio workers deployed across the country.
Millions of Children to Receive Polio Drops
The National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) said the campaign targets children under five across several regions.
Punjab will vaccinate around 10.6 million children in 13 districts, while Sindh will target 10 million children across 30 districts.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, health teams aim to vaccinate 7.3 million children in 37 districts. Meanwhile, Balochistan will target 2.3 million children across 32 districts.
The campaign also covers 447,000 children in Islamabad and around 137,000 children in two districts of Gilgit-Baltistan.
“During the campaign, over 273,000 polio workers will perform duties across the country,” the NEOC said.
“Parents are urged to fully cooperate with polio teams to protect their children’s healthy future.”
Authorities Urge Parents to Cooperate
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah also administered polio drops to children in Karachi. He urged parents to ensure their children receive the vaccine and stressed that the drops are safe.
The campaign is also being coordinated with vaccination activities in neighbouring Afghanistan to help reduce cross-border transmission of the virus.
“Polio workers reach every household, even in the most challenging circumstances, to protect every child,” the NEOC said.
Pakistan has continued targeted and nationwide vaccination campaigns to stop wild poliovirus transmission. Earlier this year, more than 45 million children were targeted through three nationwide campaigns.
Government data shows Pakistan has reduced polio cases by 99.8% from an estimated 20,000 cases in the early 1990s to 31 cases last year.
