Pakistani freelancers achieved a historic milestone by earning $1.76 billion in foreign exchange during fiscal year 2025–26. According to data released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), freelance exports increased by 78 percent compared to $984 million earned in the previous fiscal year.
The significant growth reflects the expanding role of Pakistan’s digital workforce. Both IT and non-IT freelancers contributed to the record earnings, showing strong demand for Pakistani skills in international markets.
IT Freelancers Drive Digital Export Growth
IT freelancers generated more than $1.16 billion during FY26, compared with $779 million in FY25. The sector recorded a 49 percent increase, adding nearly $385 million to the country’s freelance export earnings.
Meanwhile, non-IT freelancers showed even stronger growth during the year. Their export earnings increased from $205 million to $592 million, marking a remarkable 188 percent rise.
The growth of both sectors highlights Pakistan’s increasing participation in the global digital economy. Furthermore, improved access to online platforms and international clients has created new opportunities for skilled professionals.
Freelancing Becomes a Major Economic Contributor
Pakistan Freelancers Association (PAFLA) Chairman Ibrahim Amin said freelancers are making a valuable contribution to the national economy. He explained that freelancers bring foreign exchange into the country and also support tax revenue growth.
According to Amin, Pakistan’s freelancing industry has developed into one of the country’s major export sectors. Its earnings have now surpassed several traditional industries.
“Pakistani freelancers are not only improving their own livelihoods through talent and hard work, but are also contributing to the development of a more productive, skilled and digitally empowered workforce,” Amin said.
Pakistan Builds a Strong Digital Workforce
Industry estimates suggest that Pakistan has nearly three million full-time and part-time freelancers. This makes the country one of the largest freelancing markets worldwide.
The rapid expansion of freelancing reflects the growing importance of digital skills, remote work, and technology-based services. Moreover, young professionals are increasingly using online platforms to access international markets.
As global demand for digital services continues to rise, Pakistan’s freelance sector is expected to play an even bigger role in economic growth. The record earnings from FY26 highlight the potential of skilled workers to strengthen exports and support the country’s digital transformation.
