France announced the permanent closure of its Consulate General in Karachi. The decision is part of France’s budgetary measures to cut expenditures and streamline its diplomatic network in Pakistan and other countries.
French Consul General Alexis Chahtahtinsky announced the decision at the Bastille Day reception in Karachi.
He said France remained committed to strengthening its longstanding relationship with Pakistan despite ending its consular presence in the city.
“We shall continue deepening our relationship with Pakistan, primarily through our Embassy in Islamabad,” he said.
According to the consul general, budgetary considerations prompted the decision.
He added that the closure formed part of France’s broader strategy to maintain a leaner and more efficient diplomatic network worldwide.
Business and cultural ties to continue
Meanwhile, Chahtahtinsky said the Pakistan-France Business Alliance and Alliance Française Karachi would continue promoting bilateral connections.
He highlighted their role in supporting the French language, culture, education and people-to-people exchanges in Karachi.
The consul general described Alliance Française Karachi as an important part of the city’s cultural landscape.
He expressed confidence that the institution would continue strengthening cultural ties between France and Pakistan.
The closure marks the end of France’s consular presence in Karachi.
However, bilateral relations between France and Pakistan will continue through the Embassy of France in Islamabad.
Furthermore, consular matters previously handled in Karachi will now be managed through the embassy.
The decision reflects France’s efforts to reduce costs while maintaining its diplomatic engagement with Pakistan.
Meanwhile, officials have stressed that the closure will not affect France’s broader commitment to strengthening economic, cultural and diplomatic ties with the country.
