Four polio immunisation workers have reportedly been abducted by unidentified armed men in Tank district, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. The incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of frontline health workers during vaccination campaigns.
The abduction took place as authorities prepared to launch the November round of polio immunisation activities. The campaign aims to protect children under five against the potentially disabling disease.
Police and local authorities are expected to take steps to locate the missing workers. However, further details about the incident and the abductors remain limited.
Security Concerns Surround Polio Vaccination Teams
Polio workers have repeatedly faced threats and attacks in several parts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. Security challenges have particularly affected districts where armed groups operate.
In previous incidents, unidentified gunmen abducted vaccination workers while they performed their duties. Authorities subsequently launched search operations to recover the missing personnel.
These attacks have created difficulties for health teams attempting to reach children in vulnerable communities. Consequently, security arrangements remain an important part of every vaccination campaign.
Authorities Prepare for November Polio Campaign
The provincial Emergency Operations Centre has finalised arrangements for the November immunisation drive. The campaign began on November 2 across selected districts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
Officials plan to vaccinate more than 4.8 million children during the campaign. Around 20,772 vaccination teams have been deployed to reach households and other locations.
Furthermore, authorities have deployed approximately 30,000 security personnel to protect frontline workers. The arrangements include mobile, fixed and transit teams to improve vaccination coverage.
Pakistan remains one of the two countries where polio continues to circulate. Therefore, protecting vaccination workers remains essential to reaching children and preventing further transmission.
Authorities continue facing the challenge of maintaining security while ensuring uninterrupted immunisation activities. The latest abduction highlights the risks workers encounter while carrying out this public health campaign.
