Former Maldives foreign minister Abdulla Shahid has been arrested over allegations of sexually abusing a child. Police confirmed his arrest on suspicion of abusing a person under 18.
The 64-year-old opposition politician was detained at his residence in the capital on Monday night. Authorities arrested him under a court warrant issued in connection with the allegations.
Shahid served as foreign minister from 2018 to 2023 under former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. He also chaired the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly from 2021 to 2022.
His arrest comes as he campaigns for the Maldivian Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. The party will select its candidate for the country’s 2028 presidential election.
Shahid Denies Allegations Before His Arrest
Shortly before his arrest, Shahid rejected the allegations in a statement posted on social media. He described the circulating claims as politically motivated attempts to damage his reputation.
He also urged the public not to spread what he called unsubstantiated accusations. Police, however, confirmed that investigations into the case remain underway.
Authorities have not disclosed further details about the allegations or the evidence. The investigation will determine the next steps in the legal proceedings.
Court Orders 30-Day Remand
A Maldivian court subsequently ordered Shahid to remain in police custody for 30 days. The order followed his appearance before the court for a remand hearing.
Officials have not publicly released detailed information about the case. Meanwhile, Shahid remains in custody as investigators continue their inquiries.
His detention has drawn attention because of his prominent political and diplomatic background. He previously served as parliament speaker and led the opposition party.
The next presidential election is scheduled to take place by September 2028. Shahid’s arrest comes during preparations for the party’s candidate selection process.
