Police in Swabi launched raids against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers on Sunday to prevent a planned political gathering in Shewa Adda, Razaar tehsil. The crackdown followed the federal government’s imposition of governor’s rule and an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Former chief minister Sohail Afridi was scheduled to visit the area on Sunday evening and address party workers. However, heightened security measures prevented the meeting from taking place.
Police Conduct Raids to Stop PTI Gathering
According to reports, police raided several locations to arrest PTI workers ahead of the planned gathering. Officers also increased patrols in Shewa Adda and surrounding areas to prevent supporters from assembling.
Despite the restrictions, some PTI leaders reportedly instructed workers to reach the Razaar Sports Complex in Shewa Adda for the meeting.
However, the gathering could not proceed as planned. Police sources said the crackdown began after authorities imposed governor’s rule and an emergency across parts of the province.
The developments highlighted growing tensions between the federal government and the PTI following the political changes in KP.
Security Tightened Across Swabi
Authorities deployed a large number of police personnel at Karnal Sher Khan Chowk in Swabi’s district headquarters. The deployment aimed to manage any possible protests or gatherings by PTI supporters. Police also maintained a presence along the Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway, strengthening security around key transport routes.
These measures came amid concerns about potential demonstrations following the federal government’s decision to impose emergency measures and place the province under governor’s rule.
Political Tensions Rise in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
The cancellation of Afridi’s planned meeting reflects the growing restrictions facing PTI activities in the province. The party had intended to mobilise workers, but police action disrupted its plans. Meanwhile, the heightened security presence and raids against party workers added to uncertainty surrounding political gatherings in KP.
The situation remains tense as the federal government and PTI face an escalating confrontation over the province’s administration and political future.
