The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has warned taxpayers about a fake circular claiming an extension in the Tax Year 2026 income tax filing deadline. The board clarified that it has not issued any notification extending the deadline beyond September 30, 2026.
FBR shared the clarification through its official X account after the document circulated online. The fake circular claimed that taxpayers could file their returns until October 15 instead of September 30.
Fake Circular Claims Deadline Extension
The document, titled “Circular No. 4 of 2026-27 IR-Operations,” carried a September 30, 2026 date. It cited Section 214A of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, and claimed the extension followed requests from trade bodies, taxpayers and tax bar associations.
However, FBR confirmed that the document has no official standing. The board urged taxpayers and tax practitioners to verify tax-related announcements through its official communication channels.
Taxpayers Urged To Verify FBR Notices
FBR has not announced any extension to the Tax Year 2026 filing deadline so far. Therefore, taxpayers who have not submitted their returns should not rely on the circulating document or assume they have additional time.
The board advised taxpayers to follow official updates for information about filing deadlines and other tax matters. Meanwhile, late filing may lead to a Rs. 25,000 surcharge and could affect a taxpayer’s inclusion in the Active Taxpayer List.
Taxpayers may also face higher withholding tax rates if they lose active taxpayer status. FBR has therefore urged taxpayers to complete their filing requirements according to the officially announced deadline.
