Pakistan Kissan Ittehad President Khalid Khokhar has demanded a wheat support price of Rs. 5,000 per 40 kilograms. He warned that farmers could skip wheat sowing next season if the government delays announcing its crop policy.
Speaking at a press conference, Khokhar said wheat sowing was approaching, but authorities had yet to announce the policy. He said farmers were struggling to afford balanced fertilizer because they were failing to recover production costs.
According to Khokhar, DAP consumption has declined from 2.39 million tonnes to 1.25 million tonnes. He urged the government to offer farmers international market prices to encourage higher wheat production.
Farmers Raise Concerns Over Crop Costs
Khokhar said higher wheat prices in previous years had contributed to improved crop yields. He argued that fair returns could encourage farmers to increase production and continue investing in agriculture.
Meanwhile, sugarcane cultivation has increased 16 percent to 2.454 million acres, according to Khokhar. He added that sugar production could rise by 25 to 30 percent.
He urged the government to maintain sufficient sugar stocks for domestic consumption until November. Authorities should then export surplus sugar to prevent losses for growers and protect future crops.
Farmers Demand Fair Prices for Produce
Khokhar said farmers were seeking fair prices rather than subsidies. He added that rising input costs and inadequate returns were discouraging young people from entering agriculture.
He also called for complete deregulation if the government intends to deregulate sugarcane. According to him, food security should remain a key government priority.
Another farmers’ leader, Mahmoodul Hassan Bukhari, criticized delays in government decisions despite available crop and stock data. He warned that delayed sugar exports had previously shifted losses onto farmers.
Bukhari also supported concerns over wheat sowing and urged authorities to announce the crop policy promptly. Farmers say timely decisions remain essential for planning the upcoming wheat season.
