ISLAMABAD: Senior Judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Qazi Faez Isa, conducted a visit to Jaranwala, where he personally assessed the condition of the houses and churches that had been destroyed by fire.
While visiting the Christian Colony in Jaranwala, the soon-to-be chief justice inspected the state of the houses and churches that the violent mob had set on fire during the tragic incident on August 16.
Accompanying him was Justice Isa’s wife, who also attended the event and engaged with the victims directly.
Addressing the victims, Justice Isa conveyed that he had personally arrived to connect with them and empathize with their grief. He emphasized that this visit was not part of his official duties.
He said to them, “I will instruct the administration to carry out all the restoration work on emergency basis.”
Further he assured them that he would ensure comprehensive protection for the afflicted individuals.
The senior judge listened as the victims recounted the burning of their houses and properties. They beseeched him to assist in their pursuit of justice.
They further conveyed that fear had gripped the women and children residing in the area. In response, Justice Isa guaranteed them that there was no need to fear.
He underlined that each citizen stands as a representative of Pakistan, endowed with equal rights just like anyone else.
“You have as much right as a Muslim’s to go to the mosque,” Justice Isa said, adding that it was the government’s responsibility to protect them without any discrimination.
Justice Isa emphasized that if anyone were to target churches, it becomes the responsibility of Muslims to safeguard these places.
In addition, the judge’s wife connected with the female victims of the Jaranwala tragedy. She personally distributed clothing and various relief items to them.
Justice Isa reprimands CPO over ‘carelessness’
Justice Isa expressed strong dissatisfaction with the alleged police negligence in the Jaranwala tragedy and criticized the city police officer.
He emphasized the police’s responsibility for security and pointed out the need for better planning. He questioned the delayed police response and the officer’s dual role in the investigation.
“You don’t even know exactly when the incident happened,” he said furiously. Providing security is the responsibility of the most senior police officer, he further added.
Justice Isa also instructed the inclusion of the SHO and SP in the inquiry.
Statement after visit
In his post-visit statement, Justice Isa emphasized that serious violations of Islamic Shariah can’t be justified as revenge. He lamented the breach of guarantees for non-Muslim citizens made by Pakistan’s founder.
He highlighted that recognizing Prophet Esa and demonstrating genuine devotion is integral to being Muslim.
“The closeness of Muslims towards Christians is clearly mentioned in the Holy Quran. Those who attacked the churches seriously violated the orders of the Holy Quran, clear instructions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the role of the Caliphs,” Justice Isa added.
He stated the mob violated Pakistan’s Constitution and laws, overlooking the flag’s white symbolizing non-Muslims’ rights. He cited Article 20, which grants freedom of religion and property ownership as fundamental rights.
“Muslims should compensate non-Muslims for all possible damages. Those who attacked the churches violated the orders of the Holy Quran,” he stressed.
He concluded expressing sorrow as a Muslim, Pakistani, and human.
