Tewolde Gebremariam, the former chief executive of Ethiopian Airlines, has taken charge as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Air India. His appointment comes after his name recently surfaced as a possible candidate for the top leadership role at Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).
Air India announced the appointment on Wednesday as the airline prepares for its next stage of transformation under Tata Group ownership. The airline’s board unanimously approved Gebremariam’s appointment.
Before taking the Air India position, Gebremariam had reportedly been considered for the leadership role at PIA. However, he was never formally approached for the position.
Tewolde’s Experience In Global Aviation
Gebremariam led Ethiopian Airlines from 2011 to 2022. During his tenure, the airline expanded rapidly and strengthened its position as one of Africa’s leading aviation groups.
He also supervised major investments in aircraft maintenance, cargo services, aviation training and infrastructure. These developments helped strengthen Addis Ababa’s position as an important aviation hub connecting African markets with destinations worldwide.
His extensive experience in managing airline expansion could prove significant as Air India continues its ambitious transformation program.
Air India Pursues Major Expansion
Tewolde joins Air India during a major restructuring period following Tata Group’s return to control of the airline in 2022.
The wider Air India Group includes Air India, Air India Express and Vistara operations. Together, the group operates more than 300 aircraft and connects passengers with more than 100 destinations.
Furthermore, the group has ordered 570 aircraft from Airbus and Boeing. The large order forms part of its long-term plan to expand operations and strengthen its position in the international aviation market.
PIA Leadership Speculation
Before his appointment at Air India, Gebremariam reportedly attracted attention from PIA’s privatization team. Officials had considered him as a potential leader for Pakistan’s national airline following its planned privatization.
However, sources indicated that he was never contacted for the PIA position. His appointment at Air India now places the experienced aviation executive at the center of another major airline transformation.
His previous record at Ethiopian Airlines and the scale of Air India’s expansion plans make the new role a significant chapter in his aviation career.
