The European Union reaffirmed its support for Denmark after renewed US interest in acquiring Greenland. Officials said only Greenlanders and Danes could decide the island’s future.
European Commission spokesperson Olof Gill made the remarks during a press briefing in Brussels on Wednesday. He described Greenland as an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.
EU Stresses Sovereignty And Territorial Integrity
Gill said decisions regarding Greenland’s future belong exclusively to Greenlanders and Danes. Furthermore, he stressed that territorial integrity and national sovereignty remain fundamental principles of international law.
He added that the European Union would continue defending those principles. Consequently, the bloc reaffirmed its full solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland.
The statement followed fresh remarks by US President Donald Trump during the NATO summit. Trump again expressed his desire for the United States to acquire Greenland.
Denmark Rejects Renewed US Acquisition Remarks
Trump described American control of Greenland as a historical and strategic necessity. He also argued the United States should not have returned the territory after protecting it during World War II.
However, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen firmly rejected those comments. She reiterated that Greenland was not for sale under any circumstances.
Moreover, Frederiksen said only the people of Greenland could determine the island’s future. Her remarks echoed the European Union’s position supporting Greenland’s right to decide its own future.
