Sunny Deol Backs Fawad Khan’s Return to Bollywood in ‘Abir Gulaal,’ Urges Cultural Openness

Indian actor Sunny Deol has extended his support for Pakistani star Fawad Khan’s return to Bollywood with the upcoming film Abir Gulaal. Speaking in an interview with HT City, Deol shared that he has no objections to Pakistani actors working in India.

Despite his reputation for nationalistic roles in films like Border and Gadar, Deol emphasized that artists transcend politics. “I stay away from politics because it tends to complicate things. As actors, our work is meant for audiences across the world,” he remarked. “Whether or not someone watches, our aim is to connect with everyone.”

Reflecting on the interconnected nature of today’s global environment, Deol stressed the importance of inclusivity and welcoming collaboration between countries.

His comments came shortly after the teaser of Abir Gulaal—set to release on May 9—drew widespread attention. The film’s release has also sparked controversy, with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), led by Raj Thackeray, opposing the screening of the film due to Fawad Khan’s involvement. The release date for Abir Gulaal had originally been set for April 2.

Directed by Aarti S. Bagdi—renowned for Chalti Rahe ZindagiAbir Gulaal is a joint production by Indian Stories, A Richer Lens, and Aarjay Pictures. Fawad Khan stars opposite Vaani Kapoor in this cross-border cinematic project.
