Kanye West’s Twitter and Instagram accounts were restricted over the weekend, and the social media sites claimed they did so after internet users criticised the rapper’s statements for being anti-Semitic.
He was first barred from using Instagram by Facebook parent Meta Platforms Inc. on Friday. He then turned to Twitter, where he posted for the first time in two years on Saturday.
The rapper Kanye West and Meta Platforms creator Mark Zuckerberg were seen singing karaoke in West’s first tweet on Twitter since 2020. “Look at this Mark,” the tweet added. How about deleting my Instagram account?”
Following that, West tweeted: “You people have messed with me and tried to blackball everyone whoever opposes your agenda.” Twitter later removed the remark, in which West claimed he wasn’t anti-Semitic, for violating its policies. Additionally, his account was locked, a Twitter representative said on Sunday.
West’s return to the network was hailed by Elon Musk, a billionaire who has indicated he would buy Twitter and describes himself as an absolute supporter of free speech. Musk responded to a tweet from the rapper by saying, “Welcome back to Twitter, my buddy!
West has also made erratic online posts in the past. He was suspended from Instagram earlier this year for 24 hours after directing racial slurs at comedian Trevor Noah.
West, who has legally changed his name to Ye, had his Instagram account suspended before taking to Twitter early Saturday after a since-removed post in which he invoked anti-Semitic tropes, accusing a musician of being controlled by “the Jewish people.”
