Netflix has approved a Stranger Things spin-off series in order to help build a franchise

Netflix announced on Wednesday that it is developing a Stranger Things spin-off as part of its efforts to turn its biggest English-language hit into a broad entertainment franchise.

According to Netflix, the new series will be based on an original idea from Matt and Ross Duffer, the twins who created Stranger Things. There were no specifics about the plot or characters.

A theatrical production based on the Stranger Things universe was also announced by Netflix.

The Regency historical drama Bridgerton was surpassed as Netflix’s most watched English-language programme by the spooky thriller starring Winona Ryder and David Harbour.

When Stranger Things made its premiere in 2016, it sent shockwaves through the culture and made Millie Bobby Brown, who was 12 at the time, a worldwide celebrity.

Netflix also revealed plans for a theatrical show based on the Stranger Things universe.

The eerie thriller starring Winona Ryder and David Harbour has eclipsed the Regency historical drama Bridgerton as the most popular English-language programme on Netflix.

Stranger Things, which debuted in 2016, shocked the culture and catapulted Millie Bobby Brown, who was 12 at the time, to international fame.

The Netflix vice president who originally read the script and pushed for the series, Matthew Thunell, noted that “there’s a universality at the centre of it” and that this is one of the reasons why Stranger Things has really taken off in the way that it has. “It really is about the power of friendship and how good overcomes evil.”

It is the first series that Netflix has attempted to create as a typical entertainment franchise, with characters and stories that cross over into movies, television shows, video games, and consumer goods.

Netflix was taken aback by the show’s popularity; “honestly, we couldn’t have expected what Stranger Things has become,” said Thunell.

Netflix started thinking about ways to continue the tale through spin-offs and merchandising as the show’s following grew beyond so-called genre nerds, or science-fiction fanatics, to adults drawn in by its 1980s pop culture allusions.

As a result, a variety of Stranger Things tie-ins have been produced, including a frozen pizza with pineapple and jalapenos from Surfer Boy from Walmart and a Magic 8 ball toy from Hasbro. Additionally, visitors to Hawkins National Laboratory attractions in New York, San Francisco, and London have had the opportunity to take part in fictitious sleep studies.

Josh Simon, vice president of consumer products at Netflix, said, “We’re starting from zero and that allows us a lot of latitude to be imaginative and try new ideas.”

The new show is a part of a production pact with the Duffer Brothers, who will also work on other projects, including a live-action TV adaptation of the Death Note manga and anime series.
