Fake scammer posing as Eminem asking for donations from Metro Detroiters

A con man in Detroit used the Marshall Mathers Foundation, the rapper’s Authentic foundation, as a front to con the local residents.

A local man, who was looking for aid in taking care of his injured grandson was the target of a scam attempt in February 2022 by a man posing as Eminem. The con man claimed he would assist in covering his injured grandson’s medical expenses, but demanded money.

Another imposter allegedly asked people outside of Michigan to schedule private concerts with him this summer in an effort to obtain their personal information. He claimed to be the rapper from Detroit.

The Help Me Hank team received numerous emails from people on October 27, 2022, alleging that someone posing as an official with the Eminem Foundation had contacted Detroit in order to collect toys for Toys for Tots.

The source explained how the fictitious organisation requested personal information and credit card numbers from people who were unable to donate toys in order to make the purchase.

The first case to come to light, according to the source, involved Frederick Mclelland of Allen Park, who claimed to have received a call from someone he mistook for Eminem. “The connection developed after Frederick’s grandson, who is still recovering in a rehab facility, was involved in a serious accident. Bills were mounting up. Someone suggested contacting Eminem’s legitimate foundation, the Marshall Mathers Foundation. He called the charity, or so he believed at the time.

Days later, he received what he believed to be an Eminem call. The caller posing as Slim Shady started by requesting personal information after a few calls, and soon after, the caller would start demanding money. Experts think Frederick visited a fake foundation website, which is how the con artist acquired his information.

The Marshall Mathers Foundation, which was not involved in the fraud and has been collaborating with police, is a legitimate charity that belongs to the 50-year-old rapper.

In order to help underprivileged and at-risk youth, primarily in Detroit, Michigan, and its neighbouring communities, Eminem founded a charitable organisation.
