Tesla chief executive Elon Musk has unveiled a futuristic version of the company’s long-awaited Roadster, featuring rocket-style thrusters capable of lifting the electric sports car into the air during demonstrations.
The vehicle was showcased on Thursday at a SpaceX facility in McGregor, Texas, marking a major development nearly nine years after Tesla first introduced the second-generation Roadster in 2017.
During the demonstration, the Roadster performed several unusual manoeuvres, including driving upside down on a specially designed ramp, flipping in midair and landing with assistance from SpaceX-developed thrusters.
Tesla engineers said the sports car could accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in less than one second when using the propulsion system. The company also cited a top speed exceeding 230 miles per hour and an expected driving range of more than 300 miles per charge.
Musk described the vehicle as a product of collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX engineers. However, questions remain about its practicality, safety and eligibility for public-road use.
The company has scheduled production for 2028, although Tesla has repeatedly postponed earlier Roadster delivery targets. Pricing for the latest model has not been fully confirmed, while reservation deposits for different versions have reached $250,000.
The announcement has attracted attention from automotive enthusiasts and technology observers, but the vehicle’s commercial success remains uncertain.
Despite the impressive demonstration, Tesla must still establish whether its experimental flight technology can operate reliably beyond controlled testing environments.
