Ed Sheeran addressed the controversy surrounding Macklemore’s removal from his Loop Tour during a Philadelphia concert on Saturday. The singer performed at Lincoln Financial Field, marking his first show since the dispute erupted.
Sheeran appeared without the tour’s opening acts after Macklemore was removed from the lineup following pro-Palestinian comments. Several supporting acts and his backing band also withdrew from the tour in solidarity with Macklemore.
Sheeran Apologizes and Defends Artistic Freedom
Before starting his set, Sheeran apologized to fans and acknowledged the difficult decisions he had faced. He also said he was concerned about venues influencing or pre-approving what performers can say during concerts.
The singer said the issue went beyond criticism of his music and involved more important questions. He acknowledged making mistakes while expressing regret over the controversy surrounding his tour.
Sheeran Addresses Israel-Gaza Conflict
Turning to the conflict, Sheeran described the October 7 attack in Israel as horrific and linked it to longstanding Jewish suffering. He also described the situation in Gaza as catastrophic, unjustifiable and disproportionate.
Sheeran said he was already speaking with people across different perspectives about making a contribution to help victims. He emphasized that his concerts should remain welcoming spaces for people with differing views.
The comments came after Macklemore was removed from the US leg of the Loop Tour following his public support for Palestinians. Macklemore later announced plans to donate $1 million from his tour earnings to Palestinian relief organizations.
Meanwhile, Sheeran’s Philadelphia appearance followed days of controversy surrounding the tour. The dispute has drawn attention to questions about political expression, venue policies and artists’ freedom to speak onstage.
Sheeran’s remarks followed protests outside the Philadelphia stadium before the concert.
