Pakistan has introduced a nationwide shift to electronic passports (e-passports), with authorities announcing the applicable fees for different categories. The new system officially began on October 15, 2026, replacing machine-readable passports for new applications.
The Directorate General of Immigration and Passports (DGI&P) is implementing the transition across passport offices in Pakistan and diplomatic missions abroad. Existing machine-readable passports will remain valid until their expiry dates.
E-Passport Fees for Normal and Urgent Processing
The official fee schedule sets charges according to passport validity, page count and processing category.
For a 36-page e-passport, applicants will pay Rs9,000 for normal processing and Rs15,000 for urgent processing for five-year validity. A 10-year passport costs Rs13,500 under normal processing and Rs22,500 under urgent processing.
For a 72-page passport, the five-year option costs Rs16,500 for normal processing and Rs27,000 for urgent service. The 10-year version costs Rs24,750 for normal processing and Rs40,500 for urgent service.
These fees follow the existing DGI&P e-passport schedule. Applicants should confirm the applicable amount before submitting their applications.
Machine-Readable Passports Discontinued for New Applications
The government had set October 14 as the final date for accepting applications for machine-readable passports. From October 15, passport offices began issuing only e-passports for new applications.
However, people who already hold machine-readable passports do not need to replace them immediately. Their documents remain valid until the stated expiry dates.
Once those passports expire, holders will need to apply for e-passports under the new system.
What Makes an E-Passport Different?
An e-passport contains an electronic chip that securely stores the holder’s identity and biometric information. The document also includes security features designed to reduce forgery and support electronic verification at immigration checkpoints.
The system aims to bring Pakistan’s travel documents in line with standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Authorities also expect the technology to support electronic gates and improve passport verification.
Applicants should check the official DGI&P website for current fees, required documents and application procedures before visiting a passport office.
