Transport fares across Pakistan are set to increase after transporters raised concerns over sharply rising diesel costs. The All Pakistan Goods Transport Owners Association announced a 10% increase in fares on Thursday. Association President Muhammad Awais Chaudhry said the decision followed a significant rise in operating expenses.
Diesel Price Increase Raises Transport Costs
Chaudhry said diesel prices had increased by around Rs18 per litre over the past 17 days.
He criticised frequent fuel price adjustments and urged the government to review petroleum prices every 15 days instead.
According to the association president, rising diesel costs have placed additional financial pressure on transporters. These increased expenses could also affect consumers through higher transportation charges.
Chaudhry called on the government to immediately reduce diesel prices. He also demanded full implementation of a written agreement reached with transporters following their recent strike.
Transporters Warn of Another Strike
The association had postponed its strike for 40 days after reaching an agreement with the government.
Chaudhry said authorities had fulfilled some of their commitments. However, several important provisions of the agreement remain pending.
He warned that transporters could restart their strike if the government failed to implement the remaining commitments.
Petrol and Diesel Prices Increased
The announcement came one day after the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) issued a notification revising petroleum prices.
Petrol increased by Rs3.40 per litre, reaching Rs367.75. Meanwhile, diesel rose by Rs6.72 to Rs392.67 per litre.
The latest fuel increase has intensified concerns among transporters already facing higher operating costs.
With fares now set to rise by 10%, consumers could face additional costs across goods transportation. The situation may worsen if fuel prices continue climbing or the government fails to resolve the pending demands of transporters.
