Dr. Usman Anwar has been assigned another major position within Pakistanโs law enforcement structure after receiving the additional charge of Director General of the National Police Bureau.
The development comes while he continues serving as the head of the Federal Investigation Agency.
According to an official notification, the appointment received approval from Shehbaz Sharif.
The notification stated that Dr. Usman Anwar will hold the additional charge for three months or until authorities make a regular appointment for the position.
Officials also confirmed that the appointment became effective from May 1, 2026.
Appointment Highlights Government Confidence
The latest assignment reflects growing federal confidence in Dr. Usman Anwarโs administrative and policing experience.
He was appointed Director General of the FIA earlier this year after a reshuffle within Punjabโs senior police leadership.
Before joining the FIA, he served as Inspector General of Punjab Police since January 2023.
During his tenure, he remained involved in several important policing and administrative initiatives across the province.
Long Career in Pakistanโs Police Service
Dr. Usman Anwar belongs to the Police Service of Pakistan and joined Punjab Police in 1995.
Over the years, he has held several influential positions in federal and provincial law enforcement institutions.
His experience includes serving as Director FIA Lahore and Additional Inspector General of the National Highways and Motorway Police.
In addition, he worked as Additional IG of Punjab Special Branch.
He also served as district police officer in Okara and Sargodha during different stages of his career.
Expanded Role Brings Greater Responsibilities
The additional charge places Dr. Usman Anwar at the center of two major national institutions simultaneously.
As DG FIA, he already oversees investigations involving cybercrime, financial crimes, immigration issues, and organized crime networks.
Now, his added responsibility at the National Police Bureau further expands his role in shaping policing coordination and policy matters.
Consequently, the appointment has drawn attention from both administrative and law enforcement circles.
Temporary Appointment Until Permanent Selection
The government clarified that the assignment remains temporary for now.
According to the official notification, Dr. Usman Anwar will continue in the role until a permanent appointment is finalized or until the three-month period concludes.
However, the decision still signals strong trust in his leadership capabilities and institutional experience.
Conclusion
Dr. Usman Anwarโs appointment as acting head of the National Police Bureau marks another significant milestone in his policing career.
While continuing as DG FIA, he will now oversee additional national-level responsibilities within Pakistanโs law enforcement framework.
