Democrats have won control of the US House of Representatives following the 2026 midterm elections. Their victory ends Republican control and gives them greater power to challenge President Donald Trump’s administration.
The party capitalised on voter dissatisfaction over the country’s direction, rising living costs and controversial government policies. Democrats needed a net gain of only three seats to regain the House majority.
Election projections indicate Democrats could secure approximately 244 seats, exceeding the 218 required for control. However, the final total may change as officials continue counting votes.
Democrats will officially take control when the new Congress begins on January 3, 2027. The result also marks a significant political shift during Trump’s second presidential term.
Democrats Prepare to Challenge Trump’s Policies
The new majority will give Democrats control of House committees and greater oversight powers. They can launch investigations, issue subpoenas and demand information from government officials.
Representative Hakeem Jeffries is expected to become the next House speaker. He would make history as the first Black politician to hold the position.
Jeffries has outlined several priorities for the incoming Democratic leadership. These include reversing Medicaid cuts, extending healthcare subsidies and restoring congressional authority over tariffs.
Democrats also plan to scrutinise immigration enforcement and investigate alleged misconduct within the administration.
Trump Faces Increased Congressional Scrutiny
The election outcome could complicate Trump’s legislative agenda during the remaining two years. Democrats will have greater influence over legislation, government spending and congressional investigations.
Republicans had entered the election with a narrow House majority. However, Democratic candidates gained several previously Republican-held seats.
Trump’s immigration crackdown, tariffs and the ongoing conflict involving Iran featured prominently during the campaign. Meanwhile, affordability concerns remained important for voters across the country.
Although Democrats gained control, passing legislation will still require navigating political divisions. The administration may also face stronger scrutiny from congressional committees under Democratic leadership.
