Democrats have secured important victories in Virginia and Georgia, as Senators Mark Warner and Jon Ossoff won re-election in the 2026 US midterm elections. Their victories provide an early boost to the Democratic Party’s efforts to regain control of the Senate.
In Virginia, Warner defeated Republican challenger Bert Mizusawa, securing his fourth six-year term. The 71-year-old senator, who previously served as the state’s governor, has represented Virginia in the Senate since 2008.
Meanwhile, Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff defeated Republican Representative Mike Collins in one of the country’s most competitive electoral contests. Georgia remained a crucial battleground after Donald Trump narrowly won the state in the 2024 presidential election.
Ossoff also enjoyed a significant financial advantage during the campaign, raising approximately $126 million more than his Republican challenger.
The victories allow Democrats to defend two important Senate seats as they pursue a net gain of four seats to secure a majority in the 100-member chamber.
Republicans entered election night controlling 53 seats against the Democrats’ 47. Democrats must also protect vulnerable seats while targeting Republican-held constituencies in Maine, North Carolina and other competitive states.
The early results could reshape the balance of power in Washington and influence President Trump’s remaining political agenda.
