Democrats are projected to regain control of the US House of Representatives following significant gains in Tuesday’s US midterm elections. The party also secured victories in two Republican-held Senate seats, bringing it closer to challenging the GOP’s majority in the upper chamber.
The results represent a setback for President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans, who have supported his agenda since his return to the White House.
Democrats Make Gains in Key Senate Races
Democrat Annie Andrews won a Senate seat in South Carolina, becoming the first Democratic candidate to secure a Senate victory in the state since 1998. She defeated Republican Darline Graham, who had received Trump’s endorsement.
Meanwhile, Democrat Roy Cooper won in North Carolina. Together, these victories gave Democrats two of the four additional Senate seats they need to take control of the chamber.
However, several closely contested races remained undecided, including contests in Alaska, Iowa, Michigan, Maine, Ohio and Texas.
Democrats also retained Senate seats in Georgia and New Hampshire, where Republican candidates had faced increasingly difficult contests.
House Majority Moves Towards Democrats
Several television networks projected that Democrats would eventually secure a majority in the House. The party had picked up four Republican-held seats at the time of reporting.
However, many competitive races remained uncalled, leaving the final seat count uncertain.
Democrats also defended three Florida House districts that Republicans had redrawn earlier this year. All three districts had supported Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
Election Results Reflect Voter Dissatisfaction
The midterms served as a test of public support for Trump’s presidency. Exit polls indicated widespread dissatisfaction with the country’s direction.
Around half of voters surveyed said they viewed the elections as an opportunity to rebuke Trump. Meanwhile, 70 per cent wanted Congress to provide stronger checks and balances on the president.
Economic concerns, including higher fuel prices and affordability pressures, also featured prominently among voters’ concerns.
With several Senate contests still unresolved, the final balance of power in Congress remained uncertain. Nevertheless, the projected House result signalled a major shift in the political landscape ahead of the next congressional session.
