Danish Elahi emerged as the fastest Pakistani runner at the Sydney Marathon on Sunday, completing the 42.195-kilometre race in 3:29:07.
A strong Pakistani and Pakistani-origin contingent joined thousands of runners at the prestigious international event. Elahi finished ahead of Nosherwan Nawazish Ali, who recorded 3:49:11.
Dr Rabia Naeem led the Pakistani women, crossing the finish line in 3:52:25. Meanwhile, Muhammad Naveed Hasan finished in 3:55:58, followed by Aamar Butt at 3:57:06 and Hira Diwan at 3:57:24.
Sydney Marathon Attracts Global Field
The Sydney Marathon brought together more than 40,000 runners from over 140 countries, according to organisers. The event now forms part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors.
The route takes participants across the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge and past several famous city landmarks. Runners eventually finish near the Sydney Opera House.
For Elahi, the event marked his seventh marathon. Before the race, he said he planned to wear shalwar kameez to promote a positive and softer image of Pakistan.
Several other Pakistani runners also delivered notable performances. Kaukab Sarwar finished in 4:04:19, while Dr Adnan Afzal recorded 4:04:31.
Umer Rasheed completed the race in 4:21:53, followed by Noman Akbar at 4:22:06. Areeb Imran finished in 4:33:27, while Abdul Wahab Qureshi recorded 4:35:26.
Faizan Lakhani Completes Third Marathon
Among the participants, Geo News Deputy Sports Editor Faizan Lakhani finished the marathon in 4:54:41.
Sydney marked Lakhani’s third full marathon and his first Abbott World Marathon Major event. He trained for several months before the race and also used the challenge to raise funds for Parkinson’s UK.
The Pakistani contingent reflected the country’s growing presence at major international marathon events. Participants represented Pakistani communities across Pakistan, Australia, the United States, Britain, and Saudi Arabia.

Saud Siddiqi completed the race in 4:41:40, followed by Muhammad Muneeb at 4:47:15 and Khalid Sheikh at 4:47:35.
Nadia Karnani finished in 4:48:38, while Faizan Lakhani recorded 4:54:41. Syed Ammar Husain finished in 4:54:49, followed by Dr Jehanzeb Mughal at 4:55:19.
Hasnain Dharamsey recorded 4:58:38, while Abu Muhammad finished in 5:14:34. Qamar Zia completed the race in 5:21:11.
Muhammad Zaid Farooq finished in 5:46:42, followed by Zain Alam at 5:51:48. Junaid Memon recorded 5:59:03.
Arif Ullah completed the marathon in 6:06:37, while Jawwad Yusuf finished in 6:09:27. Tabish Mukhtar recorded 6:20:30, and Mohammad Shoaib Nizami completed the race in 6:34:53.
