The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has taken up a petition challenging PTI’s planned nationwide protests and September 27 long march.
The opposition party plans to march towards Islamabad on September 27. Moreover, PTI seeks the release of its founder, Imran Khan, who remains in prison.
IHC Chief Justice Sardar Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar heard the petition filed by citizen Waqas Ahmed. The court issued notices to the attorney general, provincial inspectors general of police and advocate generals.
Furthermore, the court directed the respondents to appear personally. It also decided to form a larger bench for the case.
Petitioner Raises Security and Legal Concerns
The petitioner’s lawyer said he runs a business in Islamabad and could face losses because of the planned protest.
He argued that PTI leaders should pursue their pending cases through legal channels. Additionally, he questioned whether protesters could pressure courts by bringing large crowds into the capital.
The lawyer also raised concerns about possible attempts to reach Adiala jail in Rawalpindi. He described the proposed demonstration as “completely illegal” and referred to casualties and financial losses during previous protests.
According to the counsel, three Rangers personnel died during an earlier demonstration. He also cited media reports that estimated losses from the previous protest at Rs240 million.
Court Summons Senior Officials
The counsel further argued that protesters could not pressure the government or judiciary to provide relief in pending cases.
He also claimed that PTI used government machinery during its 2024 protest despite Interior Ministry instructions. Moreover, he said organisers had not submitted an application to the Islamabad district magistrate for the upcoming demonstration.
The court consequently summoned the attorney general, all four provincial IGs and advocate generals in their personal capacities.
The IHC has adjourned further proceedings until September 10.
PTI Continues Mobilisation Campaign
The latest development follows KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi’s recent five-day mobilisation campaign across Sindh.
The campaign aimed to build support for PTI’s demands, including Imran Khan’s release and immediate medical treatment.
Meanwhile, Imran Khan, 73, has remained in prison since August 2023 following several convictions. He and PTI have repeatedly described the cases as politically motivated.
Since his removal from office in April 2022, Khan has faced multiple legal proceedings. Some convictions have been suspended or overturned, while several appeals remain pending.
