Pakistan’s Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem will return to elite competition at the Lausanne Diamond League on August 21. The javelin star will aim to rebuild momentum after a disappointing Commonwealth Games campaign.
Nadeem features in the men’s javelin throw entry list alongside several leading names in world athletics. His field includes Indian rival Neeraj Chopra, two-time world champion Anderson Peters, and Commonwealth Games champion Rumesh Pathirage.
The competition will also bring together Germany’s Thomas Röhler and Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott. Therefore, the Lausanne event promises a high-level javelin contest featuring several established international stars.
Arshad Nadeem Eyes Strong Comeback
Nadeem enters the Lausanne Diamond League after a difficult Commonwealth Games outing in Glasgow. The 29-year-old failed to retain the title he won in 2022 and finished ninth among 12 finalists.
His latest result fell well short of his previous Commonwealth Games success. Nadeem claimed gold in 2022 with a record-breaking throw of 90.18 meters.
However, his title defense in Glasgow never gained momentum. He began the competition with a foul, leaving him under pressure from the outset.
Nadeem then produced a 77.41-meter throw during his second attempt. He needed a significant improvement on his final qualifying attempt to remain in medal contention.
Instead, the Pakistani athlete managed only 75.39 meters with his third throw. As a result, he finished ninth and failed to reach the later rounds.
Lausanne Event Offers Tough Challenge
The Lausanne Diamond League will give Nadeem another opportunity to compete against some of the sport’s biggest names. His inclusion also sets up another meeting with Chopra, adding further interest for fans across South Asia.
Meanwhile, the presence of Peters, Pathirage, Röhler and Walcott will increase the intensity of the contest. Nadeem will therefore need a major improvement on his recent performance to challenge for the top positions. After his setback in Glasgow, the Lausanne competition could provide an important opportunity for Nadeem to regain confidence and return to winning form.
