Peshawar witnessed widespread road closures, heavy security and disrupted public transport on Sunday as authorities imposed governor’s rule and an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
Shipping containers blocked major roads across the provincial capital, while police and security personnel restricted movement around government offices and sensitive locations. The measures transformed routine travel into a difficult exercise for residents.
Major Roads Blocked Across Peshawar
Authorities placed containers along key routes, including GT Road near Firdous Chowk and roads leading towards the provincial assembly and the city’s Red Zone.
Police personnel were deployed at several intersections, while officers directed pedestrians and motorists away from restricted areas. Some routes remained accessible only to pedestrians, forcing commuters to take longer detours.
Road closures also affected areas around Khyber Road, University Road and Stadium Chowk. Meanwhile, security personnel monitored movement near government buildings and the residences of senior provincial officials.
Public Transport and Communication Disrupted
The Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service remained suspended on Sunday morning, adding to the difficulties faced by commuters. The city also experienced a mobile phone service blackout. Residents had already faced a nearly 48-hour disruption in mobile services days earlier during a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest march.
By Sunday afternoon, internet connectivity had also reportedly stopped working, further limiting communication. The disruptions came after heavy overnight rain had already left parts of the city wet and affected road conditions.
Security Tightened Around Government Areas
Police and other security personnel maintained a strong presence near the Civil Secretariat, the provincial assembly and routes leading to the Chief Minister’s House. Officials also restricted access to several roads and checkpoints, while some government areas appeared unusually quiet. The developments followed the imposition of governor’s rule and an emergency in KP, marking a significant shift in the province’s political situation.
Residents Face Uncertainty
The extensive restrictions raised concerns about daily movement, access to public transport and communication across Peshawar. Residents and commuters faced detours, closed routes and limited connectivity as authorities maintained heightened security. The duration of the roadblocks and service disruptions remained uncertain, leaving the city waiting for normal movement to resume.
