PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has called a provincial cabinet meeting as the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) long march towards Islamabad enters its fourth day. Afridi will chair the meeting on Wednesday. Meanwhile, provincial officials are expected to discuss key government matters. The administration plans to release the meeting’s agenda this morning.
PTI Convoy Continues Its Journey
The cabinet meeting comes as Afridi leads PTI supporters towards the federal capital. On Tuesday night, the convoy reached Mattani, on the outskirts of Peshawar, after travelling from Kohat.
Next, the protesters plan to move towards Khyber before heading further through the province. However, the party has changed its original route as the march progresses.
Afridi described the change as part of PTI’s strategy. He also compared the protest to a “Test match”, suggesting that several stages remain ahead.
Furthermore, PTI plans to take the convoy to Khairabad, near the Punjab border, on October 8. Afridi will announce the party’s next course of action there.
Why PTI Started the Long March
PTI launched the march from Lakki Marwat on October 4 after negotiations with the federal government failed to resolve their differences.
The two sides mainly disagreed over counterterrorism measures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The federal government sought provincial cooperation on security operations to address militancy.
However, PTI called for a jointly agreed strategy to tackle security challenges in the province. As a result, the negotiations ended without a settlement, prompting the party to continue its planned protest.
Political Standoff Continues
The long march has added further pressure to the already tense relationship between PTI and the federal government. Afridi continues to lead the convoy through Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as supporters prepare for the next phase.
Meanwhile, the provincial cabinet meeting will focus on government affairs while the protest remains underway. All eyes now turn to Khairabad, where Afridi plans to outline PTI’s next move on October 8.
