Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has received the prestigious UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award for the province’s “Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar” housing programme in Muscat, Oman.
The award was presented during a ceremony at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre on World Habitat Day. The UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour is among the organisation’s prominent recognitions for contributions to affordable housing and sustainable urban development.
The Punjab government’s housing initiative was selected after an international review of projects aimed at improving access to safe and affordable homes. Myanmar, Brazil, Tunisia and London were also selected for the 2026 honour.
The “Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar” programme provides financial support to eligible low-income families seeking to construct homes on their own plots. According to official figures, more than 200,000 applicants had received interest-free loans worth around Rs260 billion by September 2026.
The initiative was launched in March 2024 and is being implemented through the Punjab Housing and Town Planning Agency. The provincial government has described it as a major digital housing-finance programme designed to expand home ownership among low-income families.
Maryam Nawaz dedicated the international recognition to homeless people in Punjab, saying the honour belonged to families benefiting from the housing initiative.
The award places Punjab’s housing programme on an international platform and highlights efforts to expand affordable housing.
