Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz launched two housing schemes after the recent Kahna tragedy. The programmes aim to improve unsafe homes across Punjab. Moreover, the government will provide interest-free loans for repairs and construction.
Loan Scheme For Unsafe Homes
Maryam Nawaz chaired a special meeting on Apni Chat Apna Ghar and Apni Zameen Apna Ghar in Lahore. During the meeting, officials reviewed housing projects and welfare programmes. They also presented a documentary about the Punjab Pakistan Pavilion in Baku.
Under the new Apna Ghar Mehfooz Ghar scheme, families can receive Rs 500,000 for home renovation. The government will support houses with weak roofs or poor structures. In addition, authorities approved Rs1 million for constructing an extra storey.
Maryam Nawaz directed officials to release compensation funds within three days. She said the government would help families make their homes safer and stronger.
Progress Of Existing Housing Programmes
The chief minister reviewed progress under Apni Chat Apna Ghar. Officials said the government provided interest-free loans to 180,000 homeless people. Furthermore, another 170,000 families received loans through the programme.
The Punjab government approved Rs 217.8 billion for the housing initiative. As a result, authorities completed construction of 134,343 homes across the province.
Officials also reported that more than 1.278 million homeless people submitted applications. Meanwhile, the government distributed 2,000 free plots among deserving families in 23 districts.
Maryam Nawaz said families would receive additional loans for building their own homes. She also warned officials against negligence in housing projects. Furthermore, she said authorities would not place extra financial burdens on poor families. She added that the government would keep existing loan regulations unchanged.
