Shooting Erupts During Independence Day Weekend
At least eight people, including four young children, were shot and wounded in New Yorkโs Coney Island neighborhood late Saturday night. The incident took place in Brooklyn during the US Independence Day holiday weekend. Police said one woman was critically injured, while the other victims were listed in stable condition.
The shooting happened at around 10:37 pm on West 31st Street in Brooklyn. Emergency calls reported multiple people shot at the scene. Officers from the New York City Police Department reached the area and found eight victims with gunshot wounds. All injured people were immediately shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Four Children Among the Wounded
According to police, the victims range in age from 6 to 37 years old. The injured children include a 6-year-old boy who was shot in the stomach. A 7-year-old boy was shot in both legs. A 12-year-old boy was wounded in the leg, while a 14-year-old boy suffered a gunshot wound to the thigh.
Among the adult victims, a 21-year-old woman was shot in the chest and remains in critical condition. Police said the remaining seven victims, including two men, one woman, and the four children, are currently in stable condition. The incident has raised fresh concern over gun violence during major public holidays in the United States.
Police Recover Firearm, No Arrests Yet
Investigators confirmed that a firearm was recovered from the scene. However, no arrests have been made so far. Police have not released details about any suspects or a possible motive behind the shooting. The NYPD said investigators are working to identify persons of interest.
The shooting occurred as large crowds gathered across the United States for Independence Day events, fireworks, and public celebrations.
