Sudden Street Horror in Northern Italy Sparks Panic
A violent incident in the northern Italian city of Modena left seven people injured after a driver mounted a sidewalk and struck pedestrians on Saturday. Four victims remain in serious condition, according to local authorities.
The incident unfolded on a busy afternoon in the Emilia Centro area, a popular and crowded street in the city. Witnesses described scenes of panic as the vehicle suddenly veered onto the pavement and began hitting people in its path.
Mayor Massimo Mezzetti confirmed that the driver, a man in his 30s, first struck a bicycle before crashing directly into a woman. She suffered severe injuries, including crushed legs. The vehicle then crashed into a nearby shop window, further escalating the chaos.
Authorities said the situation quickly turned alarming as the driver exited the car holding what appeared to be a knife. However, he did not manage to stab anyone before being stopped.
Eyewitnesses Describe High-Speed Impact and Panic
Eyewitness accounts suggest the car was moving at high speed before it mounted the sidewalk. Several pedestrians were unable to react in time as the vehicle continued along the crowded street.
One witness described hearing multiple impacts and seeing people being knocked down. He said the situation escalated within seconds, leaving little time for escape.
Another victim, who sustained a head injury, said he narrowly avoided being struck. He reported that the driver appeared disoriented and possibly under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This claim has not yet been confirmed by police.
Some bystanders took immediate action and chased the driver when he attempted to flee the scene. According to witnesses, they managed to disarm him after he produced a knife.
Emergency services arrived shortly after and transported the injured to nearby hospitals. Four of the seven victims are reported to be in serious condition, while the remaining three sustained moderate injuries.
Police Investigation Underway as Motive Remains Unclear
Italian police have arrested the suspect and are currently questioning him to determine the motive behind the incident. Officials have not yet confirmed whether the act was deliberate or linked to any extremist intent.
Mayor Massimo Mezzetti praised the quick response of citizens who intervened during the chaotic moments. He described their actions as an example of courage and civic responsibility.
Authorities are now reviewing CCTV footage and collecting eyewitness statements to reconstruct the sequence of events. Investigators are also examining whether the suspect had any prior criminal record or mental health issues.
Mayor Mezzetti said the city remains shaken by the violence. He stressed that officials must understand the cause of the incident before drawing conclusions.
He added that if the act is confirmed to be intentional, the severity of the situation would increase significantly. For now, officials are treating it as a serious public safety incident under active investigation.
Local residents have expressed shock over the event, as Modena is generally considered a safe and peaceful city. Security has been increased in the surrounding area while investigations continue.
