The University of British Columbia (UBC) in Canada is accepting applications for its PhD in Anthropology program for the September 2027 intake. Eligible full-time doctoral students can receive a minimum annual funding package of CAD 40,000.
The university guarantees this funding for the first four years of study, bringing the total minimum support to CAD 160,000. Pakistani students can apply alongside other domestic and international candidates who meet the admission requirements.
The application deadline is December 15, 2026.
Scholarship Offers Four Years of Funding
UBC offers the research-based doctoral program through its Faculty of Arts in Vancouver. The funding package may combine university scholarships, research awards, teaching assistantships and research assistantships.
The program covers several areas of anthropology, including sociocultural anthropology, archaeology, linguistic anthropology, biological anthropology and museum studies.
However, the funding package does not mean every student receives the same combination of awards or assistantships. Individual arrangements depend on eligibility, available opportunities and academic progress.
Eligibility Criteria for Pakistani Applicants
Applicants should normally hold a recognised master’s degree in Anthropology. The university may consider candidates with a master’s degree in a related discipline under special circumstances.
UBC generally expects applicants to meet its academic standards, including an average in the B+ range or equivalent. Candidates should also demonstrate suitable academic preparation and the ability to conduct independent research.
International applicants must meet the university’s English-language requirements. Accepted tests include IELTS Academic, the Duolingo English Test and TOEFL iBT, subject to UBC’s current score requirements.
Required Documents
Applicants should prepare the following documents before submitting their applications:
- Academic transcripts from previous post-secondary institutions.
- Three letters of recommendation.
- A statement of interest of approximately 500 words.
- Details of research interests and proposed dissertation topics.
- Information about potential faculty supervisors.
The statement of interest should explain the applicant’s intended research and its academic direction. Applicants should also review faculty research interests to identify suitable supervisors.
UBC encourages candidates to contact potential supervisors. However, applicants do not need a supervisor’s formal commitment before submitting an application.
How to Apply for the Scholarship
Interested students must apply through UBC’s official graduate admissions system. They should first review the Anthropology PhD program requirements and confirm that their academic background meets the criteria.
Applicants must then complete the online application, provide referee details and upload the required documents. They should also check the university’s latest guidance on tuition fees, funding and English-language tests.
The deadline for the September 2027 intake is December 15, 2026. Pakistani applicants should begin preparing their documents early to allow enough time for recommendations and application submission.
