KARACHI: Former Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Afridi has raised concerns about Karachi’s deteriorating infrastructure and urged authorities to focus on improving the city’s long-standing development challenges.
Afridi shared his views during a recent visit to Karachi after several months. He said he felt disappointed after seeing little visible progress despite the city’s major role in Pakistan’s economy.
“I was visiting the Korangi area. We generate business worth billions of rupees, and this city provides employment to millions of people, yet I feel ashamed to see the condition of Karachi,” he said.
Afridi Calls for Faster Development Work
The former cricketer said he expected to see noticeable improvements when he returned to the city. However, he found many issues still unresolved.
Afridi highlighted ongoing construction activities in several important areas, including Korangi, SITE Industrial Area and University Road. He said these projects had continued for years without providing timely relief to citizens.
He urged government departments and relevant authorities to speed up development work. According to Afridi, Karachi needs practical solutions instead of prolonged delays in infrastructure projects.
Former Captain Highlights Karachi’s Economic Importance
Afridi stressed that Karachi remains one of Pakistan’s most important economic centres. The city supports millions of workers and contributes significantly to business activities across the country.
He said the condition of such an important city requires immediate attention. Better roads, improved public facilities and efficient urban planning are necessary for Karachi’s future growth.
The former captain expressed hope that authorities would take effective measures to transform the city’s situation.
“I hope Karachi will improve,” Afridi added.
Karachi continues to face challenges related to damaged roads, traffic congestion, urban development delays and pressure on public services. Residents and business communities have repeatedly called for long-term planning and faster completion of development projects.
