A 44-year-old man survived after falling from the Brooklyn Bridge into New York City’s East River on Sunday, August 2, 2026.
Police identified the man as Brooklyn resident Galymzhan Abaildayev.
Authorities said he climbed the bridge’s north tower on the Manhattan side at around 2:30 p.m. He reportedly removed his clothes after reaching the upper section of the landmark.
Emergency officers attempted to persuade him to return to safety. However, he later fell or jumped from the tower into the water below.
The Brooklyn Bridge’s stone towers rise approximately 278 feet above their foundations. Reports described the fall as nearly 80 metres, although authorities did not publicly confirm the precise distance from which Abaildayev entered the river.
NYPD Harbor Unit officers quickly reached him in the East River. They pulled him from the water and transported him to NYC Health and Hospitals Bellevue.
Despite the extreme height, he was reported to be in stable condition. No detailed information about his injuries was immediately released.
Kazakhstan Flag Placed on Bridge Tower
Before the incident, Abaildayev reportedly placed several flags and other items on the bridge.
One of the flags was identified as the national flag of Kazakhstan. Police also found another piece of material carrying writing that was not immediately identified.
Witness videos appeared to show Abaildayev holding an object above his head during the fall. Some reports suggested it may have been a piece of clothing or a bag.
However, there is no confirmed evidence that the object slowed his descent or contributed to his survival.
Police did not immediately announce a confirmed motive for the incident. Authorities were also investigating how he accessed the restricted section of the bridge and placed the flags there.
The incident attracted attention from pedestrians and drivers near the historic bridge. Emergency personnel responded while officers attempted to control the area.
Multiple Criminal Charges Filed
Following medical treatment, Abaildayev was taken into police custody and faced several criminal charges.
The charges included reckless endangerment, criminal trespass, public lewdness, disorderly conduct and making graffiti.
Police did not immediately disclose when he would appear in court. It was also unclear whether additional charges could be filed as the investigation continued.
The Brooklyn Bridge connects Manhattan and Brooklyn and remains one of New York City’s busiest and most recognisable landmarks.
Access to its towers and other restricted areas is prohibited because of serious safety and security risks.
The incident ended without any reported injuries to police officers, emergency personnel or members of the public.
