Federal Minister Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh says the federal cabinet initially favoured giving Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s PTI-led government another chance. However, the government later approved emergency measures after political talks failed to resolve the dispute.
Speaking to ARY News, Sheikh described the discussions that preceded the decision. He said cabinet members first reviewed concerns about the province’s law and order situation.
Cabinet Members Favoured More Dialogue
Sheikh said Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi suggested allowing the provincial government another opportunity. Sheikh and several other ministers supported the proposal.
The cabinet then paused its meeting to allow further consultations. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif later resumed the session to discuss the available options.
According to Sheikh, the government hoped political dialogue could prevent further escalation.
Ishaq Dar Holds Talks With Maulana Fazlur Rehman
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar consulted JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman as part of efforts to ease tensions. Fazlur Rehman had sought to mediate between the federal government and the PTI-led administration.
However, the discussions failed to produce a breakthrough. Sheikh said the cabinet later learned that the negotiations had not achieved the expected results.
He also clarified that the initial meeting did not discuss replacing the KP chief minister.
Government Moves Ahead With Emergency Measures
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif informed cabinet members about the unsuccessful talks during the second session. The government then proceeded with its plan to introduce emergency measures in the province.
The decision intensified the political dispute between the federal government and PTI. The two sides have disagreed over provincial governance and security cooperation.
Political Tensions Continue in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Sheikh’s account highlights that cabinet members considered dialogue before supporting further action. Nevertheless, mediation efforts failed to produce an agreement.
The situation continues to raise questions about relations between Islamabad and the provincial administration. Any lasting resolution will likely require renewed political engagement and cooperation between the two sides.
