Police have arrested a suspect accused of killing businessman Rehan Ashraf during a carjacking in Faisalabad, officials said Thursday. The suspect, Umair Khalid, was apprehended in Shahkot, located in Nankana Sahib district, following an investigation involving CCTV footage and coordinated police teams.
Police sources said officers recovered the alleged murder weapon and a motorcycle at the suspect’s identification. Investigators believe the suspect fled Faisalabad after the shooting and sought shelter at his wife’s relatives’ home.
Businessman Shot Dead While Pursuing Stolen Vehicle
According to police, Ashraf was returning from an event at Chenab Club with his family on the night of October 17. The incident occurred in the Civil Lines area when the suspect allegedly took his vehicle with a child still inside.
Ashraf reportedly pursued the vehicle using a tracking system and attempted to stop the suspect. However, the suspect allegedly opened fire, striking the businessman in the neck and killing him.
Police said the suspect abandoned the vehicle on Jaranwala Road before escaping in a rickshaw. He later collected his motorcycle from the Hilal-e-Ahmar stand and returned home.
CCTV Footage Helps Investigators Trace Suspect
Following the registration of a murder case, Faisalabad City Police Officer Tanveer Hussain formed multiple investigation teams. These teams included police station heads, deputy superintendents, superintendents and Crime Control Department personnel.
Investigators examined CCTV footage and pursued leads to establish the suspect’s whereabouts. During a search operation in Chak 73 GB, Gudian, police learned that the suspect had travelled to Shahkot after allegedly informing his father about the incident.
Information shared with Civil Lines and Millat Town station house officers, Inspector Syed Atiqur Rehman Shah and Mian Ali Akbar, helped investigators narrow their search. Police subsequently contacted the suspect’s family and confirmed his location in Shahkot.
Officers then conducted a raid and arrested the suspect. Investigators are continuing their inquiries to establish the circumstances of the killing and complete the case.
