A fresh wave of bomb threats disrupted at least 25 passenger flights across Europe on Thursday, November 5. Several airlines faced emergency security procedures, unexpected landings and military fighter jet escorts.
The threats affected flights operating between Ireland, Britain, Spain, Italy, Bulgaria and several other European countries. Although authorities received multiple warnings, initial security inspections found no explosives aboard the affected aircraft.
Multiple Airlines Face Bomb Threats
Several major airlines experienced disruptions as authorities responded to the warnings. Aer Lingus, Finnair, Wizz Air, Ryanair and LOT Polish Airlines were among the affected carriers.
An Aer Lingus flight travelling from Dublin to Rome diverted to Évreux military airbase in France. The aircraft landed safely, while passengers and crew underwent necessary security procedures.
Meanwhile, Bulgaria’s air force escorted three passenger aircraft following bomb threats. Two Ryanair flights from Copenhagen and Madrid landed in Sofia, while another flight from London diverted to Plovdiv.
Spanish authorities also received three emailed threats within less than 20 minutes. The warnings involved Air Europa and Iberia flights travelling between Madrid, Paris, Rome and Milan.
Authorities Investigate Growing Security Concerns
Furthermore, Czech police reported threats involving four aircraft heading towards Prague. Officials assessed the warnings as having low credibility but still conducted precautionary security checks.
In Denmark, bomb disposal teams inspected two aircraft at Copenhagen airport. However, authorities found no explosive devices during their searches.
The latest incidents followed another wave of threats on Tuesday, when at least seven flights and a cruise ship received warnings. Consequently, security experts have raised concerns about possible coordinated attempts to disrupt European transport networks.
Some experts believe these incidents could represent hybrid warfare tactics. However, no country has officially identified those responsible, while Russia and Iran deny involvement in similar allegations.
