Two explosions struck central Damascus on Tuesday near the hotel where French President Emmanuel Macron held meetings. Syrian state media reported the blasts, which injured 18 people.
The French presidency said Macron neither heard the explosions nor altered his official schedule. He later met Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa as planned.
Explosions Injure 18 Near Macron’s Meeting Venue
According to Syrian state media, the explosions occurred near the Four Seasons Hotel. Macron was meeting civil society representatives inside the building before departing.
The first blast happened shortly after the French president’s motorcade left for the presidential palace. Video footage later captured a second explosion nearby.
State media said the blasts injured 18 people, including four police officers. Flames and thick smoke rose from the area as emergency crews responded.
The second explosion reportedly occurred beside an ambulance parked at the scene. Authorities quickly secured the area and extinguished the fire.
Security Forces Launch Investigation
Syrian security forces launched search operations to identify those responsible for the attack. Officials also sealed nearby roads and tightened security around the blast site.
The French presidency said the explosions were not audible from Macron’s motorcade. A Reuters journalist accompanying the delegation also reported hearing no disturbance.
Macron continued his official programme without changes after arriving at the presidential palace. His visit marks the first by a European Union head of state since Syria’s leadership changed in 2024.
