Veteran Indian actor Nana Patekar has died at the age of 75 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Goa. The actor was found unconscious at his home in Dona Paula early Thursday. Doctors later declared him dead at around 5:20 am after attempts to revive him failed.
Nana Patekar Could Not Be Revived
According to Dr Shekhar Salkar of Manipal Hospital, medical teams attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation for around 45 minutes.
However, the actor did not respond to the treatment. Authorities have registered a medico-legal case and are expected to conduct a post-mortem examination.
The news has prompted tributes across the Indian film industry. Patekar’s son, Malhar Patekar, was in Pune when the actor died and travelled to Goa following the news.
A Five-Decade Career in Indian Cinema
Born Vishwanath Patekar, Nana Patekar began his film career with the 1978 movie Gaman. He built a reputation for intense performances and distinctive dialogue delivery. His work spanned Hindi and Marathi cinema, while he also appeared in films in other Indian languages.
Patekar earned widespread recognition through acclaimed films including Parinda, Krantiveer, Agni Sakshi and Salaam Bombay!.
His performances earned him three National Film Awards. He won Best Supporting Actor for Parinda and Agni Sakshi, while Krantiveer earned him the Best Actor award.
From Serious Roles to Comedy
Patekar also became popular with a younger generation through his role as Uday Shetty in the 2007 comedy Welcome. His portrayal of the eccentric gangster became one of his most recognisable mainstream performances. Beyond acting, Patekar also worked as a director and theatre artist. His contribution to Indian cinema earned him the Padma Shri in 2013.
With a career spanning nearly five decades, Nana Patekar leaves behind a distinctive legacy across Hindi and Marathi cinema.
