ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Rana Sanaullah have been appointed as members of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP).
The appointments were confirmed through an official notification issued after approval by Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi, who chairs the commission.
The development follows the resignations of PPP Senator Farooq H. Naek and PML-N lawmaker Sheikh Aftab Ahmad from their respective positions on the commission.
With these appointments, Bilawal and Rana Sanaullah will represent their respective parties on the constitutional body responsible for overseeing key aspects of judicial appointments.
The Judicial Commission plays a significant role in selecting judges for Pakistan’s superior courts, including the Supreme Court and high courts, under the constitutional framework.
The changes come amid continuing discussions about judicial reforms, the appointment process and the balance between parliamentary representation and judicial independence.
Earlier, the government had decided in principle to revise its representation on the commission, with Bilawal and Rana Sanaullah emerging as proposed replacements for the outgoing members.
The issuance of the notification formalises the changes following the resignations and completes the latest adjustment to the commission’s political representation.
The commission continues to operate under Chief Justice Yahya Afridi’s chairmanship, with its decisions carrying considerable importance for Pakistan’s judicial system.
The appointments also underscore the role of parliamentary representatives in the judicial selection mechanism established under the Constitution, as the country continues to debate the structure and functioning of its judicial institutions.
