Bangladesh is moving toward formal talks with China over a possible purchase of J-10CE fighter jets and attack helicopters. A government panel is preparing a draft agreement for the proposed defence deal.
The planned purchase could become one of Bangladesh’s largest defence procurements in years. It would also deepen military ties between Dhaka and Beijing, which already serves as Bangladesh’s largest supplier of military equipment.
J-10CE Gains Attention After 2025 Clashes
The J-10CE gained international attention after Pakistan said the aircraft helped down Indian fighter jets during clashes between the two countries in May 2025. India has disputed Pakistan’s claims regarding the aircraft’s performance.
Bangladesh has taken note of the Chinese jet’s reported performance during the conflict, according to Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman. Dhaka is seeking to modernise its air force as part of its broader defence plans.
Bangladesh Considers Major Fighter Jet Purchase
Local media has reported that Bangladesh could purchase up to 24 J-10CE aircraft. However, Rahman did not disclose the number of jets under consideration, the potential cost or a delivery schedule.
He said those details would depend on negotiations between Bangladesh and China. Pakistan currently remains the only confirmed foreign operator of the export version of the J-10.
China has supplied Bangladesh with naval vessels, combat aircraft, tanks and missile systems over the past two decades. Consequently, the proposed fighter purchase could further strengthen the two countries’ long-standing defence relationship.
