The Balochistan Assembly has disposed of a resolution seeking to abolish the Sardari system and ban the use of titles such as Sardar and Nawab. The decision came after the speaker said existing laws had already addressed the issue.
Jamaat-i-Islami MPA Hidayatur Rehman Baloch had moved the resolution during Monday’s assembly session. However, Speaker Abdul Khaliq Achakzai said legislation abolishing the Sardari system had already been enacted and implemented in 1976.
He added that the law applied across Pakistan. He also referred to Balochistan High Court decisions that the Federal Constitutional Court upheld on March 6, 2026.
JI MPA Seeks Another Opportunity
Hidayatur Rehman objected to the decision, arguing that the resolution had appeared on the assembly’s agenda. He said he would make the necessary corrections before presenting it again.
The speaker explained that he had disposed of the resolution because the legal framework already existed. However, he acknowledged the MPA’s request to discuss the implementation of the law.
Heated Exchange During Assembly Session
The matter sparked a heated exchange between Hidayatur Rehman and Opposition Leader Mir Younis Aziz Zehri. Treasury members also joined the discussion in support of the opposition leader.
Zehri argued that members could no longer debate the matter after the speaker had disposed of the resolution. In response, Rehman questioned why the opposition had taken offence at his remarks.
Parliamentary Secretary Agha Umer Ahmedzai defended the historical significance of the Sardari system. He argued that individual cases of oppression should not justify blaming all tribal leaders.
Meanwhile, Parliamentary Secretary Nawabzada Zarain Khan Magsi said members should submit a fresh resolution if they wanted to reopen the issue.
The speaker eventually adjourned the assembly session until November 10 because the house lacked the required quorum.
