The main accused in the assault case involving University of Karachi Professor Dr Arif Khan Saqi has secured bail. Police have arrested five people in connection with the case. Police had conducted raids at several locations while searching for Kunain Shah. However, authorities now say they cannot arrest him after he obtained bail.
According to the allegations, Kunain Shah and his associates assaulted Professor Arif, his nephew and others during the incident.
FIR Details Assault Incident
Professor Arif Khan Saqi registered the case at Sachal police station. The FIR names Kunain Ali Gohar Shah and other individuals as accused.
According to the FIR, Professor Arif serves as chairman of the University of Karachi’s Department of Islamic Studies. He was travelling to the university with his nephew and driver, Waheed.
The incident allegedly occurred near Sindh Green Hotel at Safoora Chowrangi. A vehicle reportedly struck and damaged the bonnet of their car.
Professor Arif allegedly asked the occupants to compensate for the damage. He also asked for their names, after which the situation reportedly escalated.
Professor Alleges Violent Assault
According to the FIR, the accused allegedly attacked Professor Arif and his nephew with pistol butts. Two armed men allegedly struck them on their heads and chests.
The professor stated that he and his nephew fell injured after the alleged assault. Four additional people then allegedly arrived and subjected them to further violence. The FIR further alleges that the group took them to a hotel and kept them there unlawfully.
Professor Arif also alleged that the accused carried out aerial firing before taking his nephew’s vehicle.
Police eventually rescued the professor and his nephew, while the accused allegedly fled the location.
Professor Arif later learned that one suspect was identified as Kunain Gohar Ali Shah. He subsequently requested legal action against him.
The investigation remains ongoing, while five suspects have reportedly been arrested so far.
