LAHORE: A sessions court in Lahore has declined to hear the interim bail application of Ahmed Tanveer, the main accused in the alleged rape case involving an Azerbaijani woman identified as Diana.
Additional Sessions Judge Rafaqat Ali Gondal recused himself from the proceedings, stating that he had already referred the matter to the Lahore High Court for further action. Consequently, the hearing could not proceed.
Tanveer’s lawyer, Safdar Shaheen Pirzada, appeared before the court and submitted an application seeking exemption from his client’s personal appearance. The counsel said the accused could not attend the hearing after his interim bail expired.
According to police, Tanveer obtained protective bail from the Peshawar High Court on October 9, preventing his arrest. He subsequently secured interim bail from a Lahore sessions court on October 15.
The court directed him to join the investigation between October 15 and October 23. However, police said he failed to cooperate during that period and requested cancellation of his bail.
The case involves allegations of sexual assault, kidnapping, robbery, destruction of evidence and criminal intimidation. The allegations remain subject to investigation and judicial proceedings.
The case has also attracted attention following allegations of financial pressure on the complainant and possible bribery linked to earlier bail proceedings. These claims have not been established as proven facts.
Meanwhile, Diana released a video statement declaring Tanveer innocent and alleging that she had previously made statements under pressure.
The investigation continues, while further proceedings will depend on directions from the Lahore High Court and the relevant judicial authorities.
