ISLAMABAD: Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has alleged that recent corruption allegations against the Punjab government are part of an attempt to discredit the provincial administration and pave the way for an alternative political setup.
Speaking in an interview with a private television channel, Asif claimed that certain influential business figures had become politically active over the past eight to ten months and were attempting to establish a new political group.
He suggested that these individuals were seeking to introduce a fresh political team ahead of the next general elections, scheduled in approximately two years.
According to Asif, some influential figures believe the existing political leadership is ageing and may not participate in the next elections.
The defence minister maintained that corruption remains a nationwide problem and requires collective efforts from political leadership at both federal and provincial levels.
He also addressed his recent exchange with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, saying political and ideological differences should not create personal hostility.
Asif further criticised the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s political approach during its four years in power, arguing that it had increased political bitterness.
He rejected suggestions of political deal-making and questioned whether the government would withdraw cases that had already been reopened.
The minister also expressed goodwill towards Fazlur Rehman despite their recent disagreement in parliament.
