Police have arrested the owner of a private school in Peshawar’s Dir Colony after a roof collapse killed dozens of students and teachers. Authorities are investigating the tragedy, which has raised serious concerns about the building’s structural safety.
The collapse occurred at a school operating under an educational trust. Rescue teams rushed to the scene and worked to recover children trapped beneath the debris.
Initial reports placed the death toll at 32, including at least 30 children and two female teachers. Several other people sustained injuries, some of them critical.
Police Confirm School Owner’s Arrest
Peshawar Capital City Police Officer Mian Saeed confirmed the arrest of the school owner. He said the building had a weak structure, which investigators are examining as part of the inquiry.
Authorities are investigating whether poor construction or other safety violations contributed to the collapse. However, the precise cause has yet to be established through a formal investigation.
The arrest does not establish criminal liability. Investigators must determine the circumstances surrounding the collapse and whether anyone breached applicable safety requirements.
Rescue Teams Face Difficult Conditions
Rescue workers faced difficulties reaching the damaged building because narrow streets limited access for heavy machinery. Officials also expressed concern about the stability of the remaining structure.
Emergency teams and local residents worked together to remove debris and recover victims. Authorities transported injured children to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Lady Reading Hospital declared an emergency to manage the casualties. Medical staff continued treating injured students, while families gathered to seek information about their children.
Government Orders Investigation Into School Safety
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi expressed grief over the loss of young lives and sought a detailed report on the incident.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also expressed condolences and directed officials to accelerate rescue and relief efforts. He called for the injured to receive the best possible medical treatment.
The tragedy has renewed concerns about construction standards and safety inspections at educational institutions across Pakistan.
Authorities must now establish why the building collapsed and determine whether the school complied with relevant regulations. The findings could help identify responsibility and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
