Argentine President Javier Milei shocked the world by declaring the United Nations as a useless organization. He stated this during his address to the United Nations General Assembly session on Wednesday.
The President of Argentine claimed that the UN has failed to ensure peace globally. Unfortunately, it is a bitter truth that the monopoly of a few countries has made this global forum a sitting duck.
Milei, a close Latin American ally of US President Donald Trump, has repeatedly used the UN platform to challenge international institutions and what he describes as a “woke” agenda.
UN Faces Criticism Over Global Security
During his speech, Milei accused the United Nations of failing to fulfil its responsibilities regarding collective security and human rights.
He said the organisation had instead allowed what he described as chaos, violence and international terrorism to expand.
Milei called the UN a “useless organization” and criticised its bureaucracy, describing officials in strongly negative terms.
He also accused the organisation of failing to address Argentina’s longstanding claim to the Falkland Islands.
Argentina refers to the British overseas territory as the Malvinas and maintains that the islands form part of its territory.
The two countries fought a war over the islands in 1982. Argentina has also accused Britain of violating a UN resolution concerning unilateral actions in the disputed territory. Milei argued that countries following international rules receive little benefit, while those violating them face insufficient consequences.
Argentina and US Announce Infrastructure Plan
Meanwhile, Argentina and the United States announced a joint initiative aimed at improving Argentina’s infrastructure and strengthening connections with major Atlantic ports and Western markets. The initiative, known as the Andes-Atlantic Corridor, seeks to encourage investment across several strategic sectors.
According to a joint statement, the project will focus on transport, digital infrastructure, minerals and energy.
The initiative will also include Vaca Muerta, a major hydrocarbon deposit located in southern Argentina. The announcement further highlighted growing economic cooperation between Buenos Aires and Washington under Milei’s administration.
The infrastructure plan aims to connect key Argentine economic sectors with international markets while supporting investment and trade opportunities.
